Position Description

The Director of Operating Tax will be responsible for the oversight and management of the sales and use tax, property tax, federal excise tax, motor fuel tax, and business license functions within Ryder System and its subsidiaries. He/She is also responsible for tax advice, tax research, tax minimization, government relations support, acquisition support, system upgrades and implementations, audit support and defense with state, county and local tax authorities.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation preferred
  • Twelve (12) years or more experience in sales tax and use tax
  • Twelve (12) years or more experience in high level management
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility to operate and self-driven to excel in a fast-paced environment
  • Capable of multi-tasking, highly organized, with excellent time management skills
  • Detail oriented with excellent follow-up practices
  • Effective leadership skills. Able to make high level decisions and implement plans to drive results
  • Ability to:
    • Negotiate and settle tax assessments and appeals
    • Develop, implement and maintain ‘best practice’ processes
    • Lead and coach others including direct reports
  • Very strong analytical & problem solving skills
  • Strong Accounting background and expertise (advanced level)
  • OneSource Indirect Tax system knowledge (intermediate level) preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)


  • Ensures tax compliance processes are operating correctly to minimize Ryder’s tax exposure
  • Ensures that Ryder is adequately reserved for potential federal, state and local audit assessments related to underpayment of sales and use tax, federal excise tax, and Canadian tax for all Ryder legal entities
  • Keeps up to date on tax changes impacting Ryder’s sales tax and motor fuel tax systems and processes and ensures all systems are timely updated for tax releases and communicates changes to impacted departments
  • Ensures department procedures are in compliance with SOX requirements
  • Manages sales and use and motor fuel tax audits in the review of tax documentation, establishing requests for information, review of audit work papers, analysis of audit exposures and potential refunds and communication of audit results to impacted groups
  • Responds to tax inquiries from Senior Management, field and SSC personnel and other departments
  • Participates in tax research and planning projects
  • Participates in Company projects and initiatives that will impact Ryder’s tax systems and compliance processes
  • Works directly with Internal Audit and External Auditors on SOX reviews within the department
  • Performs other duties as assigned
